Why do we NEED to focus on strength?
Following a strength training plan offers a plethora of benefits, both physical and psychological. Here are some reasons why focusing on strength training can be so advantageous and why it’s often referred to as the “fountain of youth”:
- Improved Muscle Mass: Strength training helps increase muscle mass, which not only enhances physical appearance but also boosts metabolism. Higher muscle mass means more calories burned at rest, aiding in weight management.
- Increased Strength: This might seem obvious, but building strength through resistance training makes everyday tasks easier. It enhances functional fitness, enabling you to carry groceries, climb stairs, or perform other activities with less effort and risk of injury.
- Bone Health: Strength training is known to increase bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, especially as we age. This is particularly crucial for women, as they are more susceptible to osteoporosis.
- Boosted Metabolism: Unlike steady-state cardio, which primarily burns calories during the exercise session, strength training leads to an “afterburn” effect called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). This means your metabolism remains elevated post-workout, burning more calories even at rest.
- Enhanced Joint Health and Flexibility: Contrary to the misconception that lifting weights is harmful to joints, properly executed strength training can actually improve joint health by strengthening the muscles around them. It also enhances flexibility, reducing the risk of injuries.
- Better Posture and Balance: Strength training exercises often target core muscles, improving posture and balance. This not only reduces the likelihood of back pain and other postural issues but also enhances athletic performance and reduces the risk of falls, particularly in older adults.
- Mental Well-being: Exercise, including strength training, releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress. Additionally, achieving personal strength goals can boost confidence and self-esteem.
- Longevity: As mentioned, muscle is often referred to as the “fountain of youth” because maintaining muscle mass is linked to longevity. Research suggests that muscle mass is inversely related to mortality risk, meaning the more muscle mass you have, the lower your risk of premature death.
- Disease Prevention: Strength training has been shown to lower the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. It improves insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
- Improved Quality of Life: Ultimately, following a strength training plan can lead to an improved quality of life. Whether it’s being able to play with your grandchildren, excel in sports, or simply enjoy daily activities with ease, being strong and healthy positively impacts every aspect of life.
Strength training isn’t just about building muscles; it’s about improving overall health, longevity, and well-being. By making strength training a part of your regular routine, you’re investing in a healthier, more vibrant future.
